Creationism Vs Evolution

I watched the first part of "Darwin's Brave New World" and was amazed by the conflict between religion and the scientific community about how fauna originated on this planet. People with religous beliefs consider the world to be created by God and the scientists of that time concurred with this theory, until Darwin came along.  Now, in today's terms it is all about Darwin's Theory of Evolution, which leaves God out of it.

Why does it have to be one or the other?  Why can't it be both creationism and evolution?

Darwin was very good at collecting examples of species as they evolved over time, but is very quiet about the "how" of the evolutionary process.

I remember reading a book by Edward Edinger about a particlar bird species that lived in opposite sides of the globe.  The scientists studying these birds discovered that one of the birds on one side of the planet learnt a new skill and within a short period of time one of the birds of the same breed on the other side of the planet learnt the same skill.  This indicates to me a form of blueprinting.  Where did the inspiration arrive for the bird to try a different skill? Was it by accident, or did the God atom have something to do with it?  If it was by accident, why did both populations of birds learn to do the same skill at roughly the same time. It was like a switch was turned on.  Yes, animals evolved over time and the skeletal remains prove it, but the cause of the evolution has not been satisfactorally investigated by the scientific community.
